Abstract

Retailers nowadays invest large sums of money in customer communication. Choosing a suboptimal communication method will lead to waste of investment. The main purpose of this study is to select the optimal method based on customer communication criteria. For this purpose, the Promethee technique, a multi-criteria decision making technique, is employed and several communication methods are evaluated based on the criteria of control, flexibility, reliability and cost. According to the findings of the study, traditional advertising still remains to be an effective method. In addition to the traditional advertising, in-store communication and social media marketing are the other effective method. As the Promethee technique is not commonly applied in decision making in the field of marketing, the approach and findings of this study should contribute to the academic literature.
