Abstract
The similarities between the thoughts of Kemal Tahir and Dostoevsky result from the fact that they both have seen the Westernization as the most fundamental problem of their nations. Although it is more than possible to detect some common themes in the writings of Kemal Tahir and Dostoevsky, their approaches to the Western question differ widely from each other. Dostoevsky's distinction between the Russian society and the European West is based on thoughts, ideals and beliefs, reflecting his idealist philosophical approach. However, Kemal Tahir focuses on the social and economical structures and the property relationships in order to outline the main dissimilarities between the Ottoman-Turkish society and the West. Dostoevsky's solution to the problem of order rising from the Westernization is religion. On the contrary, Kemal Tahir emphasizes the role of the Ottoman State tradition in maintaining the order and justice. As a final solution to the Westernization problem Dostoevsky proposes a Russian socialism defined in religious terms. However Kemal Tahir proposes a statist Turkish socialism, emphasizing its Oriental roots.
