Abstract

Great Britain’s official presence in Jerusalem starts with the foundation of the British Consulate in 1838 and ends with its withdrawal in 1847 following Jewish terrorism. During this period, the value system behind the policy followed by Great Britain towards Jerusalem and its surrounding was notably variable due to international as well as internal political developments. The Consulate in Jerusalem was established to resist the Russian influence in the area that had increased after the Unkiar Skelessi Treaty and was a potential threat to the routes to India. This paper concludes that British policy makers instrumentalized various religious and ideological values to influence political decision makers and the public into supporting the varying policies intended to advance their colonial purposes- mainly protecting the routes to India. To this end, they presented the British public and the Evangelist Church with the concept of a necessary Jewish restoration; in other words, converting the Jews into Protestants. This was followed by an introduction of the British ideal of Jewish Return to Palestine to British Jews and later to the Zionists. This Ideal later evolved into the Jewish return to the Holy Land when the Evangelist Church failed with their Jewish restoration, thereby making way for the Anglo-Jewish alliance. The main international reason behind this alliance was the emergence of Germany as a rival to Great Britain in the Near East. This alliance transformed into the Anglo-Jewish conflict after the First Great War when Britain founded the British Mandatory in Palestine and disregarded the famous Balfour Declaration.
