Abstract
This work aims to expose the unexplored importance of two torus bases of "wulstbasis" type that was found in Kirsu (Meydancıkkale) which is one of the Mountainous Cilician sites, and now exhibited at Silifke Museum, from the perspective of the Anatolian architectural history. To the extent that the relevant publications could be followed, the specimens of this torus type that can be dated to the Achaemenid period appear only over rock-cut tombs in Paphlagonia in Anatolia. We are not aware of any usage of these in Achaemenid Era monumental architecture in Anatolia, whereas there exist many other cases where torus bases were used in monumental architecture at geographies under Achaemenid influence. That torus bases were used during Achaemenid Era in Paphlagonia tomb architecture points to the fact that this type of torus base was known in Anatolian Achaemenid Era architecture. Thus, it is possible that this type of torus base was used in architectural structures that we could't get any archeological evidence of. However no archeological finds that prove this and no relevant publications appeared until now. Kirsu bases are of the end of 5th century BC and the first half of 4th century BC. That the bases were independent architectural elements proves that they are used in monumental structures of Achaemenid Era at Kirsu. In this sense, Kirsu bases harbor the property of being the only archeological find that proves that this type of bases were used in the monumental structures of the Achaemenid Era in Anatolia. Thus they are important from the perspective of the Anatolian Achaemenid Era
