Abstract

A soil incubation experiment lasting 6 months was carried out to ascertain effects of tobacco dust, mushroom compost and grape marc, which contain high organic matter, on the extractable cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in soil. Four rates (w/w) of three different organic wastes (% 0, 2, 4 and 8) were added to the soil and the samples were kept at 70% field capacity during incubation period at 28C°. The soil pH decreased significantly with increased incubation time and amounts of tobacco dust and grape marc added soils, but the addition of mushroom compost resulted in a significant decrease in soil pH in the second incubation period (P>0.05). The content of organic matter increased significantly with increased amount of all three organic wastes (P>0.05). The DTPA-extractable Cd and Ni decreased significantly with increasing rates of mushroom compost and grape marc amendments, but the addition of tobacco dust resulted in a significant increase in the extractable Cd and Ni during the incubation period (P>0.05). The DTPA-extractable Cu decreased significantly with increasing rate of grape marc added soil and increased with increasing rate of tobacco dust added soil (P>0.05), but there was no consistent effect of mushroom compost. The DTPA-extractable Zn increased with increasing rates of alt three organic wastes added soils. The concentrations of heavy metals in the present study were higher in the second incubation period than in the first incubation period (P>0.05).
