Abstract
The purpose of this study is to research the impact of the gender difference on Sports Related Success Motivation amongst the professional atheletes. In total, 83 athletes (39 female and 44 male) who were players of the Izmir based teams during the 2002-2003 Turkish Basketball Season, had participated to this research. Within the scope of this study, Sports Related Success Motivation Scale (Willis, 1982) has been applied to the participants. The Scale is applied to the participants in groups at the places they had been camping for the tournaments or before group exercises. Age disstribution of the participants is between 17-year-old and 30-year-old for the female athletes and between 16-year-old and 32-year-old for the male athletes. The data gathered from the participants was entered into the SPSS program (version 10.0) package and the “t” test is applied to it (p<0.05). In order to distinguish the differences between genders, two metrics on Sports Related Success Motivation Scale-Power Motive (POW) and Success Related Motives (MAS-MAF) were used. As a result of this research, power motive (POW) and motive to aproach success (MAS) had proved a statistically significant (p<0.005) difference between genders whereas motive to avoid failure(MAF) had not (p>0..05).
