Abstract

Triage means determining the urgency of patients, who are admitted to the hospital and giving thepriority of intervention to those that are at great riskof life. Moreover, obstetric triage is the attemptmade by the health personnel to evaluate andclassify the patients according to their urgencywithin 10 minutes of admittance to the emergencyservices for obstetric reasons. Since unpredictedobstetric complications may occur in the significantpart of pregnancies, it is very important to identifythese problems as early as possible and to performthe most appropriate intervention as soon aspossible in order to protect the health of mother andnewborn, to prevent maternal mortality andmorbidity. Deciding to do the most appropriateintervention in a fastest way during an emergencysituation and performing the intervention in aquickest way are the main tasks of the obstetrictriage staff. Before 1986, obstetric triage has notbeen well defined. Starting from 1986, obstetrictriage has begun to become a specializeddepartment for both outpatient and inpatient care.It also has a highly functional and preferred positionwithin the general prenatal services as it providesaccess to multiple clinical services. Understandingthe role of contemporary obstetric triage in the areaof current health care and organizing obstetricemergency care services in accordance with currentdevelopments and standards are important both forthe providers of this services and for those in therace for the leadership in health care servicing. Thisreview article was prepared to inform the healthprofessionals on obstetric triage.
