Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine preprocedural anxiety and depression levels of thepatients who underwent electroconvulsive therapy(ECT). This descriptive research was conductedbetween November 1, 2013 and December 10,2013 in Psychiatry Clinic at Gaziantep UniversitySahinbey Research and Practice Hospital. Data werecollected from 45 volunteer patients aged 15 yearsand older who have been hospitalized forelectroconvulsive therapy or admitted to hospital forvoluntarily undergoing ambulatory ECT. PersonalInformation Form and Hospital Anxiety andDepression Scale (HAD) were used to collect data.Cronbach's alpha, Kruskal Wallis tests, One WayANOVA and Student-t tests were utilized forevaluating data. The education status, thehospitalization experience and the family history ofmental illness which were among identifyingcharacteristics of patients caused a statisticallysignificant difference on their HAD depression scorescompared to the mean score (p<0,05). Of thepatients, 28 (62,2%) and 35 (77,8%) scored greaterthan cut-off value with regard to anxiety scores anddepression scores respectively. On the basis of these findings, it can be concludedthat the anxiety and depression scores of all thepatients were high. It might be suggested to preventthe occurrence of anxiety and depression in mentallyill patients who would undergo an electroconvulsivetherapy that the nurses and the ancillary personnelcan establish a therapeutic communication with thepatients and inform them prior to the therapy.
