Abstract

Objective: Criminal cases comprise an important section of the patients admitted to the emergency departments. Physicians may arrange incomplete or incorrect forensic reports for these cases because of reasons such as workload or training gap. In this study, the cases for which reports arranged by the physicians serving at emergency departments of the hospitals in service in or nearby our city Eskişehir were reviewed for their fallacies and incompetence and solutions have been presented. Material and Methods: In this study, the cases for which definitive reports were demanded from our unit were evaluated, who were issued forensic reports at the emergency departments previously between 06.01.2011 and 06.01.2012. Results: Physicians were in the tendency to increase the weight of trauma in most of the criminal cases, especially in traffic accidents. It was observed that there was no relation between faulty activity and the quality of the physicians. In 50.4% of the cases, no alcohol-detection was performed. Conclusion: More effective training of forensic medicine should be provided at medical faculties. Postgraduate training for arranging forensic reports should be programmed. The establishment of consultation units for criminal cases giving services for 24- hours throughout the country, where all physicians can apply when needed will contribute to the solution of the problem.
