Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the impacts of the presence of substance abuse on crime and violence characteristics in offender and non-offender patients. Materials and Method: The descriptive research was carried out in August 2016 at Manisa Mental Health and Diseases Hospital Alcohol and Drug Addiction Research, Treatment and Education Centre (AMATEM). The sample of this study was composed of 246 patients. An information form and Buss- Durkee Aggression Scale were used in the research. The data were analysed using numbers, percentage distribution, mean, ± standard deviation and chi- square test, and Independent Groups t-test was used in cross-group comparisons. Findings: When the crime rates among the patients were examined, it was seen that 83 of them who have been committed offences were substance users. Verbal aggression was more common among the patients using substance than among the non- users (p <0.05). It was found that the patients with a criminal history scored significantly higher (p˂0.01) on physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger, indirect and total aggression subscales. DİSCUSSİON and CONCLUSİON: In the light of these findings, it was emphasized that there is a strong link between substance use and committing crime and violence and the importance of attempts to prevent substance use was stressed.
