Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to share the development of a training program on Public Health Physician’s Role in Smoking Cessation Services and present the first implementation’s participant opinions and results. Materials and Methods: The main objectives of the course were determined with the contributions of educators from various institutions. The participants’ needs were determined through the assessment of the views of Ege University Public Health residents. The program was applied in two consecutive days, using different training methods (video demonstrations, group discussions, case discussions, simulated patient interviews etc.). The participants’ level of knowledge was assessed with a pre-test and a post-test and their views on the program’s content and functioning was evaluated using a questionnaire. Findings: 37 physicians from 15 universities’ public health departments were participated in the course program. The participants’ level of knowledge on smoking cessation significantly increased at the end of the course (pre-test mean=%69.9±12.0 and post-test mean=%81.1±10.6; p<0.001). The participants’ appraisal of the course showed high mean values in all feed-back items. According to qualitative data analysis, the inclusion of different institutions’ smoking cessation experiences was the item most frequently stated as “the course’s most fruitful/beneficial aspect”. Conclusion: The course has been developed with a multidisciplinary approach. The participants’ level of knowledge has increased and their appraisal of the course was positively reflected in their feed-backs. It is planned to pursue the program as a regular educative activity after developing it according to the experiences and feed-backs of this program.
