Abstract

Emergency departments are chaotic, crowded places wherein health services are provided under pressure. In addition to caring for a large number of patients in the emergency department, the fact that these patients often have a group of diseases that require rapid intervention plays a role in increasing the physician's stress. In the literature, there are few studies investigating the probability of depression among emergency department employees in our country. Considering this, it was decided to conduct a study addressing emergency physicians working at public hospitals in the fourth largest province of Turkey. In our study, it was aimed to evaluate the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and the incidence of depression among emergency department physicians. Within this scope, a total of 211 physicians, 120 of them being general practitioners, 56 residents and 35 specialist physicians, were contacted and asked to complete the questionnaire. According to the findings obtained from the study, of the physicians, 47.39%, 29.86%, 19.91% and 2.84% had the probability of minimal, mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. There was a significant difference between the levels of depression with regard to the years of service (p<0.05). A significant difference was also found between the probabilities of depression in terms of the level of monthly income (p<0.05). To conclude; it was determined that professional experience, income level and job satisfaction are important factors for the probability of depression among emergency physicians.
