Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of dental caries in a group of primary school students and the influence of socio-demographic characteristics on caries. The collection of data and the examination screening of the students were performed in a primary school in the city of Eskisehir on 15 May, 2003. The frequency of existing caries in those whose mothers were housewives was 96.6%, whereas this was 45.0% in those whose mothers were civil servants (p<0.001). The frequency of caries in those with a minimum wage or slightly over was more (about 95%), whereas this was rather low in those with better income levels (23.1%) (p<0.001). The frequency of existing caries one or over in those who use a regular tooth brush was 79.4%, whereas this increased to 96.2%in those not using (p<0.05). The friquent of caries in those who were handicapped was less than those who were not (%58.3 and %88.6, respectively) (p<0.05). Although this study included a group of students low in number, it put forward that there was widespread negligence on oral health. Students should be educated by continuous health programs about oral and tooth health such as acquiring a healthy diet habit and reasonable oral hygiene.
