Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of articles about acts of violence and the nature of the coverage (including how the story is written, the information given and the photographs) in a newspaper. One of three bestselling newspapers in Turkey was chosen randomly for examination during October, 2005. The number of news articles involving violence, the page on which those articles were printed, the picture content, the coverage of the victims and perpetrators, cause of the violent act and the instruments of violence used were recorded. In the newspaper, 130 news articles were detected during October 2005. On average, 4.33 news articles with violent content were printed monthly. There were only two days in which no news of violence were reported. Victim pictures were printed in 73.1% and perpetrator pictures in 70.8% of the articles. Identity information about the victim and perpetrator was overtly given in 50.8% and 44.6% of the articles, respectively. The most common form of violence in the news was physical abuse (54.6%), which was followed by motor vehicle accidents (8.5%), neglect (7.7%), sexual abuse (6.2%), mass action (4.6%) and emotional abuse (3.8%). In a total of half of the articles, the causes of violence were reported as insult (%22.3), psychiatric problems (% 16.2), alcohol and substance abuse (%6.9) and socioeconomic conditions (%6.2). A pistol was used in one fifth of the violent acts. As a part of child health monitoring, physicians can help parents find healthy media sources for their children by giving parents media education counseling services.
