Abstract

Introduction: Nowadays, the workers employed in various professions should work in collaboration with each other to provide high quality healthcare and patient care. Creating a collaborative working environment can only be achieved through combining knowledge, skills and attitudes among professional groups, and interprofessional education and collaborative practices. This study was conducted to compare the levels of readiness for interprofessional education among medical and nursing students, and physicians and nurses. Method: This descriptive study was conducted at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Nursing, and Hacettepe University Adult, Children and Oncology hospitals. A total of 197 nursing and 323 medical students, and 156 nurses and 145 physicians participated in this study. The data were collected using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) that has been adapted into Turkish. Findings: While there was a difference in terms of gender among the readiness levels of medical students for interprofessional education (p=0.01), such a difference could not be found among those of the nursing students. The differences regarding the gender (U=285,5; p=0.04) and units (oncology-operation room p=0.027) of nurses and the gender (p=0,013) and units (pediatrics-adult p=0,019) of the physicians were detected. The differences were found between the scores of the physicians (p=0,020) and medical students and between those of the nurses (p=0,001) and nursing students; there was no difference between the scores of the nurses and physicians. Discussion: A difference in terms of gender was detected among the nurses and physicians, in favour of the females. These findings are compatible with the results of the studies in the literature that were conducted using RIPLS. The differences in favour of the students were found in the scores of the physicians and nurses compared to those of the students. While the results of the previous studies in the medical field support our findings, in the nursing field, compatible or opposing conclusions were drawn. Conclusion: Further qualitative studies should be carried out in order to reveal the reasons of the differences detected through our study that compared the levels of readiness for interprofessional education, and to be able to intervene in the results.
