Abstract

The process willingly participated by the educator and the student in order to establish changes in the behaviour of the individual is called training. In basic life support (BLS), training for airway management and support of breathing and circulation is given, without using any instruments except protective equipment. This study was planned in order to investigate the effects of the BLS training program on student motivation and to evaluate the practicability and the success of the BLS training program which was given during the 2006-2007 semester to phase I medical students of the Harran University. For adult, child and infant BLS training, three hours of theoretical presentation and three hours of practical training on models were given. True-or-false tests were conducted before and after the training process in order to evaluate the knowledge of the students. The opinions of the students on the training program were recorded using the feedbacks taken after the training. The post-tests gave us high success ratios and positive feedbacks. The students stated that they had found the practical training very useful and beneficial. Therefore, we believe that basic life support training given to phase I medical students can increase the motivation of the student and can be applied successfully.
