Abstract
Providing children with age-appropriate sexual education and raising the awareness of parents are important for sexual health and protection from sexual abuse. This study was carried out by selecting 60 preschool children aged 3-6 from a kindergarden, and it aimed to determine how often their parents gave them sexual education and what their attitudes towards sexual education were. The questionnaire forms filled in by the parents were used as the tool for data collection. Of the 58 mothers and 60 fathers who participated, respectively, 96.6% and 93.3% think that sexual education should be given to their children; 70.7% and 55.0% think that sexual education should be given by parents; 74.1% and 61.7% stated that they do give sexual education to their children. As the most common reason why parents do not give sexual education to their children, 46.6% of the mothers and 39.1% of the fathers selected “not knowing how to approach the issue”. 39.7% of the mothers and 47.5% of the fathers think that they do not have enough information for the healthy sexual development of their children; and 79.3 % of the mothers and 71.2% of the fathers think that sexual education should be started when the children start asking questions about the subject. Both in mothers and in fathers, statistically significant associations were not detected between whether or not giving sexual education to their children and the sex of the child, the educational status, occupation, age group or income level of the parents (p> 0,05). 25.9% of the mothers and 25.4% of the fathers said that they had witnessed their children stimulating themselves by playing with or rubbing their genitalia. Looking at the ratio of parents feeling inadequate about their knowledge on the sexual characteristics of their children and considering the difference between the ratios of parents who think sexual education should be given and of those who actually do, developing education programs for parents could be proposed. The fact that socioeconomic condition does not have an effect on giving sexual education could suggest that cultural factors may play a role.
