Abstract

Not only physiological factors but also social and psychological factors play a role in the continuation of the breastfeeding. The factors such as the mother’s perspective on breastfeeding, her selfconfidence, self-efficacy and motivation are the psychological determinants affecting the mother’s breastfeeding duration. Recently, research-based recommendations suggest that the health professionals should screen the women for the motivation before offering breastfeeding counselling and support. If the value attributed by a woman to breastfeeding isn’t adequate and/or she doesn’t believe that she can breastfeed successfully, she exhibits a non-motivated behaviour and the chance of continuation of breastfeeding decreases. Self- Determination Theory (SDT) is one of the important theories supporting this hypothesis. According to this theory, it is known that the individuals with high level of autonomous motivation level take action more quickly and succeed, whereas those who get into the act through controlled motivation cannot maintain this activity for a long time. According to SDT, the mothers having controlled motivation terminate breastfeeding in a shorter period of time whereas the mothers with autonomous breastfeeding behaviours breastfeed their babies longer. There are only few studies in the literature correlating the breastfeeding motivation and SDT. In this article, the impact of breastfeeding motivation, which was explained basing on SDT, on the continuation and success of the breastfeeding was described.
