Abstract

Schools are ideal places for educating children and adolescents in health issues. General health education in schools accompanied by information in nutrition and personal hygiene constitute an important component of health improvement programmes. The World Health Organization states that improvements in hygiene and hand-washing practices are simple and cost-effective solutions that may reduce the incidence of diarrhoea by 45%. Objective: The objective of the present survey is to conduct needs analysis related to personal hygiene and hand-washing practice covering 3rd grade students attending to primary schools under the Çankaya District Directorate of National Education, a district inhabited mainly by families of relatively lower socioeconomic status. Method: The survey was conducted in five primary schools in Çankaya District in the school year 2012- 2013. The survey group consists of 199 3rd grade students attending to primary schools. Findings: The survey assessed the level of information of students in personal hygiene and their skills in hand-washing. For the level of information in personal hygiene, a test with 10 questions was applied whereas the guide to hygienic hand-washing skills in 10 steps was used to measure skills in this area. The survey also collected socio-demographic data relating to children. Results: In assessing hand-washing skills it was observed that only one out of 199 students could practice all 10 steps correctly and in appropriate order. There was no student with full score in information level test. 127 students (63.8%) had scores 7 and above. The survey revealed that students were not at the level desired in personal hygiene issues and their skills in hand-washing were low. This shows that it is necessary to give training in and improve personal hygiene practices of primary school students.
