Abstract
Objective: Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most commonly observed disorders among children. The prevalence of CP in Turkey is stated as 4.4 out of 1.000 births. The present study seeks to answer two questions: Is there a difference between depression levels of mothers of children with cerebral palsy and mothers of healthy children, and does the severity of cerebral palsy affect the level of depression of the mother? Materials and Method: In this controlled survey there are 71 children with cerebral palsy and their mothers while the control group consists of 56 healthy children and their mothers. To measure the level of depression, all mothers were applied the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The severity of cerebral palsy was assessed by using Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Data obtained was analysed by using the programme SPSS 18,0 while statistical significance was measured by the value p<0. 05. Findings: Scores of mothers of children with cerebral palsy according to the Beck Depression Inventory were found significantly higher than those of mothers of healthy children (p = 0.003). Depression symptoms were observed in 60 per cent of 71 mothers whose children had cerebral palsy while it was 41.1 per cent among mothers of healthy children. Conclusion: The present study will further support the evidence that rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy should be accompanied by interventions to support psychologically the mothers of these children.
