Abstract
Aim: This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting the level of compassion and intercultural sensitivity among surgical nurses. Material and Method: The research is a descriptive study. It was carried out between April and July 2017 with volunteer participation of 102 nurses at a state hospital in a city located in eastern Turkey. Research data were collected using the Introductory Information Form, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, and the Compassion Scale. Findings: It was determined that the total average score achieved by nurses participating in the study was 84.87±10.34 (range= 59-105) on the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale and was 96.37±14.35 (range=62-117) on the Compassion Scale. The total average score on the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale was found to be high in those who didn’t have any difficulty in giving care to the patients from different cultures and who had knowledge about the transcultural nursing concept and were interested in this issue. The difference between the mean scores was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The mean score of the nurses on the Compassion Scale was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05, p<0.01) among those, who were interested in transcultural nursing and willing to have information on this subject. Conclusion: It is considered that providing training on cultural sensitivity and compassion during nursing education or post-graduate training would be beneficial for the nursing profession in order to reach a better position and for high-quality patient care in a globalizing world. In this context, new training strategies related to intercultural sensitivity and compassion should be developed
