Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to determine the influence of media on the status of having OGTT among pregnant women. Method: The sample of this descriptive study, which was conducted in the maternity outpatient clinic of a university hospital between November 2018 and June 2019, consisted of 384 pregnant women. The data were collected through face to face interview method using a questionnaire. Number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square and Fisher exact tests were used in the analysis of the data. Findings: It was found that most of the women, who were less than 24 weeks pregnant did not intend to have OGTT and almost half of those with pregnancies beyond 24 weeks have not got OGTT (p <0.05). The most common reasons were considering the test unnecessary or harmful to mother and baby, giving credence to the controversial information covered by the media claiming that the test is harmful and doctor’s not recommending it. It was revealed that the pregnant women who thought that they have been influenced by the media news about OGTT (54,1%) did not have the test, those who were unemployed, housewives, and who have not had OGTT in their previous pregnancy, did not have the test during their current pregnancy, but the majority of those who could easily ask health personnel questions had OGTT (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was seen that pregnant women did not get OGTT or did not intend to have it as they were influenced by the media news. Therefore, pregnant women should be provided with accurate information about OGTT and information pollution should be eliminated through the programs that will prevent people from acquiring incorrect information.
