Abstract

Dual phase steels are new class of HSLA steels. Formability and strength properties of dual phase steels are superior to HSLA steels from which dual phase steels produced. In literature there are very limited investigations on the machinability behaviour of these steels. In this work, effect of martensite volume fraction (MVF) and its morphology in dual phase structure produced from AISI 8620 on the cutting forces which is important machinability parameter was examined. Test results were obtained from machinability test carried out with respect to ISO 3685. Results showed that variation in cutting forces were dependent on martensite morphology and its content. At the low cutting speeds, cutting forces of dual phase steels having % 25 MVF and steels with alpha+P microstructures were almost same but at high cutting speeds dual phase steels having % 25 MVF exhibited a little bit lower cutting forces than those steels having alpha+P microstructures. At high cutting speeds cutting forces of dual phase steels having % 45 MVF were higher compared to the other steels. However, at high cutting speeds cutting forces were considerable lower than the other steels. The lowest cutting forces were observed in dual phase structure having finest micructure and % 45 MVF.
