Abstract

In this study, the flow, velocity profiles and energy losses in transition pipes have been numerically investigated. Experimental results taken from the literature on transition pipes have been used and examined. In the experimental work, a series of experiments were carried out, in order to determine the effect of the inlet and outlet sectional shape of the transition pipes on energy losses. The inlet and outlet sectional geometries of the test pipes are rectungular and their long axes are perpendicular. The experiments were repeated for three different Reynolds numbers (3.0x 105, 4.5x105, 6.0x105) in five measurement positions along the pipe.Numerical modelling of the transition pipe has been performed by using the CFD program Fluent. The finite volume method has been used. The standard $k-\epsilon$ turbulence model has been used to simulate the turbulent flow in the pipe. The RSM model has also been employed for this modelling problem. As the flow is symetrical two dimensional and has only axial velocity component, this model has been found relatively expensive. Therefore only the $k-\epsilon$ turbulence model results have been introduced in this work. Numerical results (i.e. velocity profiles) have been compared with the experimental results. Very well converged solutions were obtained and numerical results were very close to the experiments.
