Abstract
This study was performed randomized in order to compare the efficacy and tolerability of low dose cyclosporin A (CyA) and chloroquine (CQ) in 30 active RA patients that assigned to two groups. First group received CyA (initial dose 2.5 mg/kg/day, maintenance dose 3.7 mg/kg/day) and second group received CQ (initial dose 300 mg/day, maintenance dose 150 mg/day) for five months. At the end of the study we obtained significant improvements on morning stiffness, pain score, Lee Functional Index and Ritchie Articular Index (p<0.001) and CRP levels (p<0.05) in both groups. In contrast to CyA group, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate improved significantly (p<0.05) in CQ group. There was no significant difference in clinical efficacy and safety between two groups. As a conclusion, both low dose CyA and CQ were effective in RA and low dose CyA may be an alternative in the treatment of the RA.
