Abstract

THE EVALUATION OF LOW BACK PAIN IN STEEL INDUSTRY EMPLOYEES This study was planned to reser arch the risk factors of low back pain among the employees working in heavy industry. It was carried out on 79 male, cases having mechanical low back pain with respect to clinical and radiological terms. The working positions, daily and total working period, the reasons that initiate the pain and pain periods were researched. Lumbar mobility measurements were evaluated. The average age of the cases working within the same branch for. an approximate period of 6 years was 36.28. Of all the cases, 59,6 % of them were working by bending forwards; 27.8 % performing repetitive body rotations; 3.9 % suffering vibration and 8.7 % standing upright without moving. The rate of the persons having pain within the last month was 20.3 % and the rate of the ones having ache within the last 12 months was 35.5 %. The people who had pain for more than 12 months were 44.3 %. Of all the cases, 5.1 % slips-fall, 28.9 % sudden non-neutral trunk motion, 32.5 % manuel handling (especially heavy lifting) were found to be causative factors. In lumbar mobility measurement, flexion was measured by modified Schober test; lateral flexion and extension by standard goniometer. The determined average mobility values were compared to the values of 58 cases who did not suffer from low back pain. In cases having mechanical low back pain the average mobility values were found to be decreased significantly (p<0.05) when compared to the control group.
