Abstract
Lumbar spondylosis in one of the most common degenerative joint diseases. In the treatment of this disease nonsteroid antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) are of value besides physical therapy. This randomized double blind study was conducted to compare the efficacy and tolerability of flurbiprofen with naproxen sodium in the treatment of patients suffering from lumbar spondylosis. Forty patients (32 women, 8 men) aged between 48-74 were recruited. The patients were given 200 mg flurbiprofen or 275 mg naproxen sodium twice daily with a period of 21 days. The assessment of pain, clinical measurements and side effects of the drugs were performed at baseline and at the end of the study. We detected no significant difference between the two drugs with respect to efficacy for pain and for some of the outcome measures. But, in the flurbiprofen group, there was a significant difference with respect to clinical measurements like Schoeber and lateral flexibility test scores additionally. The number of adverse events in the flurbiprofen group was less than in the naproxen sodium group but the difference was not statistically significant. In conclusion flurbiprofen is as efficient as naproxen sodium as an analgesic antiinflammatory drug. As flurbiprofen exhibited better results by improving the signs and symptoms of patients, we recommend this agent for the treatment of patients suffering from lumbar spondylosis.
