Abstract

The use of silicone oil starting in 1962 dramatically improved the quality of posterior segment surgery. The rheologic properties of each silicone oils are important in determining their suitability for specific applications in ocular surgery. The purpose of substitution of silicone oil with vitreous is to provide a long-term tamponade to the retina. Tamponade force is simply a function of the difference between densities of aqueous humor, vitreous humor, and the silicone oil bubble. Bubble cohesiveness and immiscibility are functions of the interfacial surface tension and, of viscosity as well. Specific gravity, surface tension, and viscosity, are functions of the exact chemical composition of the oil bubble. The purpose of this article is to examine the physical and chemical properties of silicone oil used in ophthalmology.
