Abstract

Purpose: To compare the choroidal thickness in obese patients with healthy control group measured by optical coherence tomography.Material and Methods: 37 eyes of 37 patients who Body Mass Index over 30 and normal control groups with similar axial lengths were enrolled in the study between March 2014 and July 2016 prospectively. Patients who have undergone eye surgery or have a systemic disease that will affect the choroidal thickness (hypertension, diabetes, renal failure) were removed from study. Choroidal thickness was measured under the fovea, at 1,500 microns at the temporal and nasal location of the fovea with optical coherence tomography at 9:00 am. The values of both groups were compared with the independent sample t-test. Values of P <0.05 were considered statistically signifi cant. Results: The mean age of the patients was 38.43 ± 14.35 in the obese group and 33.24 ± 12.12 years in the control group (p = 0.97). Choroidal thickness under the fovea was in the obese group (301.51 ± 35.08 μ) and in the control group (284.21 ± 29.96 μ) (p=0.017). Choroidal thickness at 1500 μm temporal of the fovea was in the obese group (257.97 ± 27.51 μ) and in the control group (244.32 ± 25.17 μ) (p=0.031). Choroidal thickness at 1500 μm nasal of the fovea was in the obese group (228.59 ± 24.46 μ) and in the control group (214.84 ± 20.85 μ) (p=0.005). Conclusions: Choroidal thickness in obese patients is signifi cantly higher than the healthy control group
