Abstract
In this study, the effects of queen genotype and breeding season on the amount of mandibular pheromone in honeybees were determined. For this purpose, in three different seasons (April, June and September), Caucasian, Italian and Aegean ecotype of Anatolian honeybee queens was reared. 9-oxodec-2-enoic acid (9 ODA), 9-hydroxydec-2-enoic acid (9 HDA), methyl p-hydroxybenzoate (HOB) and 4-hydroxy-3- methyloxphenyethanol (HVA) quantities in the mandibular glands of the queens collected from nucs after 8-10 days from they start laying eggs were determined by GC instruments. According to the results of this study, the effect of the queen genotype on the amount of 9 ODA and 9 HDA was determined to be significant (P 0.05). In terms of HOB and HVA, the effects of queen rearing season, genotypes and season * genotype interactions were detected to be significant (P<0.01). In Caucasian, Aegean ecotype and Italian races, the amount of 9 ODA were 76.35 ± 5.71 μg, 70.76 ± 4.92 μg and 148.96 ± 4.63 μg; the amounts of HDA were 26.34 ± 3.67 μg, 30.38 ± 3.16 μg and 73.61 ± 2.98 μg, respectively. The amounts of HOB and HVA were determined to be 5.87 ± 0.61 and 0.77 ± 0.15 μg in Caucasian; 5.15 ± 0.50 and 1.05 ± 0.13 μg in the Aegean ecotype and 7.47 ± 0.52 and 1.74 ± 0.14 μg in Italian races, respectively. In conclusion, in this study, it was determined that the mandibular pheromones of queen bees were differed depending on genotype and season.
