Abstract

Potable water pipeline systems, by which the population provides clean water, are critical facilities that increase the living quality of the society. Parallel to the increasing number of inhabitants and to the development of industry any breakdown of those systems will affect economy and human life negatively. Operational damages resulting from maintenance works, pipe relocation works, and construction of other infrastructures cause failure in services of potable water facilities. Another factor that causes damage in these systems is natural disasters, and the most harmful of them is earthquakes. Utilization of structural analyses is very important for production of earthquake resistant pipelines, or for maintenance, reparation, and retrofitting of pipelines before earthquake. In the scope of this study buried, internally pressurized, steel pipelines, which are frequently encountered in potable water systems, are three dimensionally modelled and their time-history analyses are done by using finite elements software ANSYS Workbench V17.1. The stress and displacement quantities of steel pipes are investigated by changing the parameters depth and pipe diameter in the performed analyses. Additionally, a practical method is developed for performing this type of parametric long-lasting analyses.
