Abstract

In this study it is aimed to evaluate the effec¬tiveness and toxicity of sulfasalazine and low dose corticosteroid treatment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Twenty patients with rheumatoid arthritis applied to the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Ko¬caeli University Medical Faculty were treated with sulfasalazine and low dose corticoster-oids, and the changes in clinical and laborato¬ry findings were followed. Evaluations at the end of 1st and 3rd months showed a statistica-ly significant decrease in duration of morning stifness , activities of daily living pain scale score, visual analogous scale score, Ritchie ar¬ticular index score and swollen joint count and increase in grip strength of right and left hands. Evaluations at the end of 1st month showed a statistically significant decrease in sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and rheumatoid factor and rheumatoid factor lev¬els. No significant decrease in the sedimenta¬tion rate and C-reactive protein levels were found at the end of 3rd month but in rheuma¬toid factor levels.
