Abstract

By tracing the compositional process of Beethoven’s“Ten Sonatas for Piano and Violin” from the sketchbooks to the first editions, this study tries to show how the final text came to be; why the first editions, which provide the foundation for the later editions, are significant; and finally give insight into the composer’s methods of working from a historical perpective. Furthermore, the study presents the most up-to-date information on the original manuscripts and the editions of the work. The information provided in this article aims to allow for a beter understanding of the work for performers, academics and/or students
