Abstract

This article explores the definition of ‘image’ in the plastic arts and the ways in which it makes change form and meaning. The moment the visual images get transmitted to the lookers, with the connotations they evoke, images undergo a radical change. The relation between image and meaning collapses. For instance, the images that the concept ‘death’ evokes vary according to the artist’s perception of the image and the characteristics of the era.Image and symbol are similar concepts which can be used interchangeably. Yet, the difference between them is that symbol refers to the general, image to the singular; and that symbol is the final form of meaning but image entails a possibility of change. Allegory is a fundamental concept which includes both image and symbol, and it means to use something ‘in the place of’ another thing
