Abstract

The research focuses on the project named “According to an Eyewitness” by photographer Azadeh Akhlaghi. In the project, the female artist, who was born in Shiraz during the 1978 Iran Islamic Revolution, reconstructed the mysterious death stories of the prominent characters of Iran. Azadeh Akhlaghi appears as a witness in these photographs. She was an imaginary witness. Photographs on the recent Iranian political history led to controversy by bringing murders, some of them unsolved, to the agenda. Akhlaghi chose important names for her project, consisting of characters that influenced the evolution of Iranian history. In the scenes she constructed, the photographer emphasized her witness to history by including herself in the composition so that the central figure is not visible. In this article, one of the works of the artist’s project is handled as a subject in historical and formal terms and compared to the “Three May” by Goya. In 1814, Goya painted the violence that exists in history. 198 years after Goya, Akhlaghi can be counted as one of the artists who brought to the agenda that the violence in history is continuing, based on Iran’s recent history. This research, by comparing the two works of Goya and Akhlaghi, is a study on how artists witness historical events in different centuries.
