Abstract
In this study, the sculptures of public sphere in Ankara and İstanbul are examined and evaluated in the light of cultural, artistic and political environment of the 1980-1989 period. The fluctuations in numereous fields as a result of the 12 September 1980 military coup d’état are observed in the art scene of the era as well, such a reflection had its repercussions particularly in the public sphere. By focusing on the erected and demolished sculptures of the aftermath of 12 September, the study aims at an explanation on how the goverments and the local administrations viewed art in the public sphere. In this context, art in the public sphere and actors behind the creation have been discussed. According to information gathered on the sculptures in question is listed at the end of the article. This article mainly focuces on sculptures other than statues of Atatürk. The study mentions Atatürk statues briefly, but focuses on the other sculptures. The reason for this is that although the Atatürk statues of the period were handled comprehensively in previous studies, a comprehensive study was not conducted on the other sculptures.
