Abstract
Architectural historiography has studied the early Republican architecture of 1923-1950 in terms of its close relationship with the nation building processes, thence particularly has focused on the public spaces of the modern Turkey. In line with this approach, public buildings such as hospitals, schools, libraries; and places like parks, avenues, squares were of the major concerns of the academic research and literature so far. When the issue comes to studying civil architecture, very little number of researches have been conducted, and the researches in question specifically studied the axis of Ulus-Yenişehir, with the aim of recording the residential development in the vicinity. On the other hand, residential building and its development in the southern part of Yenişehir, which encompasses the area from Kavakalıdere to hillside Çankaya have been understated, if not neglected. Considering this fact, this study focuses on Güvenevler Neighborhood / Güneş Street where the first residential compound was built while the center of the new capital, Yenişehir, was still being populated by single houses and apartments in 1936. Particular objectives of the research are to understand the legal processes of the opening of Güvenevler Neighborhood to construction and to register architecturally significant houses, which have apparently remained underexplored in spite of their known designers.
