Abstract

Taner Ceylan, who amongs the photorealist painters of contemporary Turkish painting, generally portrays the emotions of the individual in his artworks. The emotion of “loneliness”, which is one of these emotions, draws attention in terms of being depicted frequently in the artist’s painting series named “The Lost Paintings”. For this reason, it is aimed to make a research about this painting series both to form an aesthetic interpretation of the emotion of loneliness which can be seen as a reference in the artworks of the artist and to understand the artist’s depictions which have semiotic values. The research which has also another goal that is to contribute to the science and art literature consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, biography analysis is investigated to reveal the artist’s résumé and statement. In the second chapter, some of the artworks from this painting series are exemplified in parallel with the subject. In the third chapter, the last artwork of this painting series called “Spring Time” is analyzed semiotically because of the fact that it has different visual codes from the other paintings. Findings obtained from the research are resolved together in the conclusion part. As a result, it is found that Ceylan interpreted the emotion of loneliness in the context of his country’s historically important social issues and an important event of the era he witnessed. It is thought that the artist describes the loneliness he felt in his inner world by identifying himself with the events of the past and present
