Abstract

Mehir is the property or financial benefit that a woman is entitled to receive from her husband at marriage. The fact that a large number of verses and hadiths are dealt with from various angles can be considered a sign that special attention has been attached to this issue. Therefore, it can be said that mahr is an issue that needs to be studied. In this research, the subject of the mahr was examined based on the period of the Prophet and the Companions. The narrations were polled, and it was tried to determine what was given as mahr and the amounts of mahr in that period. Based on the data obtained, it can be said that the mahr that the Prophet gave to his wives and wanted for his daughters was close to each other. Although he didn’t give the same amount to each wife, it is possible to talk about a general average. It is very difficult to mention such a standard in the narrations about the Companions. Because there are differences from a pair of shoes to amounts that can be expressed in millions today. In this study, the amount of mahr paid by the Prophet and his companions was determined and transferred in the currencies of that period. Then amounts tried to be converted into today’s currency based on gold and sheep prices.
