Abstract

Invaluable works were produced in the field of Arabic Language and Rhetoric during the Ottoman period. The book called “Risālah fī aqsām al-istiārah” by Arif Mustafa alKutāhī, an Ottoman mudarris, is a work that deals with istiārah and its parts. In this context, evaluation and critical edition of the book is of importance as it provides data about how a mudarris used to teach rhetoric. The work to be critically edited is one of the three works in a periodical registered with the number 00351-003 Aşir Efendi, in Suleymaniye Library. The work, which consists of five leaves, is the writer’s original copy and no other copy has been reached, yet. Information about the author’s life is limited to what he presents in the risālah. Moving from this information, it cannot be exactly determined who the author really is. However, there are several signs showing that the author is Hattat (Calligrapher) Mustafa al-Kutāhī. Looking at the statements in his introduction, his mastership in using the language and competence in Arabic language can be observed. In his risālah, in which he discusses a subject of rhetoric, the author’s own style is also quite eloquent, and his prose is enriched with rhymes as well as his perfection in poetry.
