Abstract

Since Aristotle, the question of the modality of propositions has been one of the subjects of both philosophy and logic. Islamic philosophers have divided the existence into three modalities, necessary, possible and impossible, according to the nature of what the relationship between the subject and predicate implies. If the judgment in the proposition corresponds to the real members of the subject in the external world, each of these three forms of existence is called the “substance” of the proposition. Only if the judgment corresponds to the mental form of the subject, then these three logical positions are expressed as "mode".Mulla Hadi Sabzawari, one of the most important figures of the transcendent philosophy school in the 19th century, states that the three asset modalities are a necessary abstraction of the mind. He says that modalities don't have ontological realities in the external world. According to him, modalities have only conceptual reality. He tries to refute their views on this issue by criticizing those who accept the ontological reality of modalities. Sabzawari emphasizes that there are three different forms of relationship for each of the modes: “by itself”, “by something”, and “by relation”. He divides the general existence into three groups as copulative, inhering and self-subsistent existence”. He divides the absolute existence into two as in-itself” and " existence not-in-itself.”
