Özet

Sahâbe hayatları tarih boyunca Müslümanlar açısından araştırma konusu olmuş, bu konuda birçok eser yazılmıştır. Abdullah b.

Abstract

The life-stories of the Companions have become a subject-matter of inquiry by Muslims throughout the history, and a vast genre of literature about them have emerged. Abd Allah ibn Hudhāfa al- Sahmī migrated to Ethiopia in the early times of the Revelation and assumed many important ambassadorial posts. He descended from a wellestablished family and was known for his impressive ingenuity, exceptional humorous and diplomatic skills which constitute the central topic of this essay. What makes him prominent from the viewpoint of the early Islamic diplomacy is that he carried out crucial negotiations as an ambassador in one of the two great Empires of the time and as a prisoner of war in the other. He possessed all the qualifications of a successful diplomat, such as integrity, judgmental reasoning power, efficient oratory skill and competency in directing the course of conversation. This essay aims to investigate the diplomatic missions of Abd Allah ibn Hudhāfa both in Sassanid and Byzantine Empires –such an independent study has not been carried out yet- and thereby make a modest contribution to the newly emerging studies of the Islamic diplomacy.
