Abstract

Aim: To evaluate knowledge and awareness of ambulatory prothrombin time monitoring systems among the physicians and the patients who received warfarin. Material and Method: An anonymous questionnaire was applied to physicians and patients who received the therapy more than six months. Stratified random sampling as a method of sampling was used. The research was rendered with 104 patients under vitamin K antagonists and 376 physicians consisted of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and neurologists. Results: The awareness of ambulatory prothrombin time monitoring systems was 35% among the physicians. If they had any knowledge, 35% of them would have advised those systems to their patients. Although 35% of the physicians had heard of ambulatory prothrombin time monitoring systems 13% of them had informed to patients about that device. The awareness of ambulatory prothrombin time monitoring systems was 8% among patients and only 1% of the patients had used portable devices. Conclusion: Both the physician’s and the patient’s knowledge and awareness about ambulatory prothrombin time monitoring sys- tems was poor. Utilization of the device could be increased by informing physicians and patients.
