Abstract

Objective: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio is closely associated with different stages and complications of hypertension. However, data on the relationship between exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio are limited. In this study, it was aimed to compare the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio values of subjects with exaggerated blood pressure response to ex-ercise and control subjects. Material and Method: Data of exercise test, biochemical and whole blood counts of asymptomatic subjects without history of hyper-tension and diabetes mellitus were analyzed retrospectively. The exercise stress test was performed according to the Bruce protocol. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio was obtained by dividing the neutrophil count by the lymphocytes count in the whole blood count. Results: Fifty-four (24 women) subjects with exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise and 54 controls (22 women) were included in the study. The resting systolic and diastolic blood pressures were higher in the exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise group (p <0.001 and p = 0.031). Leukocyte and neutrophil counts were higher in the exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise group (p = 0.048 and p = 0.003). Between the two groups, there was no significant difference in the count of other shaped blood components. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio was higher in the exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise group (1.56 ± 0.50 vs 1.93 ± 0.64, p = 0.001). As a result of multiple regression analysis, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (OR: 4.850; 95% CI 1.871-12.575; p = 0.001) was found to be an independent predictor of exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise. Conclusion: In this study, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio was found to be higher in individuals with exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise than in subjects with normal blood pressure response.
