Abstract
Objective: Comparison of the complication rates of surgeons who performed different numbers of phacoemulsification surgery during residency period. Material and Method: A total of 1000 eyes of 912 patients who underwent phacoemulsification surgery by two surgeons at the same hospital between December 2012 and June 2014 were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups (Group 1; The cases of the surgeon who performed a great number of surgery during residency period, n=500 eyes), Group 2; The cases of the surgeon who performed a small number of surgery during residency period, n=500 eyes). Intraoperative and early postoperative complication rates were compared between group 1 and group 2. Independent t-test was used for statsitical analysis. P values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Intraoperative complications were observed in 4 cases (0.8%) in group 1 and 31 cases (6.2%) in group 2. The difference was statistically significant (p=0.000). Postoperative complications were observed in 55 (11%) cases in group 1 and 70 (14%) cases in group 2. The difference was not statistically significant (p=0.211). Posterior capsule rupture was significantly higher in group 2 than group 1 (p=0.033). There were no significant differences in terms of other postoperative complications. Conclusion: The surgeon who performed a greater number of phacoemulsification surgery in residency period can perform phacoemulsification surgery with a very low complication rates. Phacoemulsification learning programs should be organized according to this data.
