Abstract
Effects Of Hormone Replacement Therapy On Tear Function Tests In our study, we investigated the effects of postmenopousal hormone replacement therapy on conjunctiva and tear film.We performed Schirmer's test 1, tear film break -up time (BUT), mucus ferning tests (MFT) and impression cytology tests (IC) on 80 eyes of 40 patients under postmenopousal hormone replacement and 76 eyes of 38 postmenopousal women those taking no medical therapy. There was no significant difference between two groups considering Schirmer's test 1 (p>0.05) and impression cytology (p>0.05) but considering tear film break-up time (p<0.001) and MFT (P<0.05) results were significantly different. Putting the results of the three tests together; tear production (Schirmer's 1), quality of tear (BUT.MFT), and ocular surface (IC), if two of them are pathologic, diagnosis is dry eye. When the groups ■ were compared according to this criteria.there was significant difference between the two groups.(p<0.05) Dry eye is less common in hormone replacement group.
