Abstract
Intraocular Lens Implantation for Traumatic Cataracts in Children In this study postoperative result in 18 children with unilateral traumatic cataract who underwent intraocular lens implantation between April 1989 and April 1994 were evaluated according to final visual acuity, refractif error, the status of the posterior capsule and complications. Cataract had resulted from perforating trauma in 12 cases and from blunt trauma in 6. Age range was 5 to 18 years. Posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation following cataract extraction was performed in 16 children while anterior chamber intraocular lens was implanted in the remaining two. Mean follow-up time was 29.2 months (12 to. 52 months). Final visual acuity was 20/40 or better in 12 cases (66.7%) and the succes rate would increase to 83.3% (15 cases) if vision 20/50 or better was taken as criteria for sufficient visual outcome. The most common complications were early postoperative fibrinous iritis (55.6%) and late posterior capsule opacification (56.2%) and patients with the latter complication underwent Nd-YAG laser capsulotomy about 14.2 months after the initial operation.
