Abstract
PURPOSE; To evaluate stereoacuity development in children with normal binocular vision, and to investigate the reliability of stereoscopic tests for screening amblyopia and abnormal binocularity. METHOD: One hundred-fifteen children, ranging in age from 3 to 6.5 years, were first assessed with the TNO and Titmus stereotests. Afterwards, the 4-D prism test, Snellen visual acuity test and cover test were performed. Cycloplegic retinoscopy and fundus examination were performed in the children who were unable to be tested for visual acuity. RESULTS: Binocular vision anomalies were detected in 3 of the 115 children. The TNO test was comprehended by the largest number of the children. When they were evaluated in three age groups and six-month intervals, there was a significant difference between their stereoscopic values on the TNO; whereas there was no difference on the Titmus test. The stereoscopic values of each three groups were significantly different. CONCLUSION: The TNO test is reliable for screening binocular vision anomalies and significant amblyopia causing deterioration in binocularity. Also, stereoacuity in children with normal binocular vision improves significantly between the ages of 4 and 5.5 years, and reaches adult level at 5.5 years of age.
