Abstract
PURPOSE: In this study we aimed to investigate the relationship between diabetic retinopathy and serum IgA levels type II diabetic patients DESİGN and METHODS: Our study involved 80 people composed 20 patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy in type II diabetes, 20 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy in type II diabetes, 20 patients with no diabetic retinopathy complications in type II diabetes and control group of 20 volunteered people with no diabetes or other systemic diseases. Serum IgA levels were determined with Beckman array nefelometer system. RESULTS: When compared with the control group IgA concentrations were found significantly higher in type II diabetic patients. Serum IgA levels were directly proportional to the severity of retinopathy. Serum IgA levels were highest in proliferative diabetic retinopathy and lowest in type II diabetic patients with no diabetic retinopathy. CONCLUSION: Higher serum IgA levels in type II diabetic patients, supports that this could be a non-specific sign for presence diabetic retinopathy and its severity.
