Abstract

PURPOSE: There are different etiologic factors on the conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma development. Oncogenic human papilloma viruses (HPV) have been found in malign conjunctival lesions. The p53 tumor suppressor gene has been documented to exist in muted forms in many types of squamous cell carcinoma in the body. In this study, a relationship between the presence of HPV infection and p53 protein expression within tumor tissues from patients with conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma were investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten patients with conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma were included this study. The specimens obtained from patients were examined with immunohistochemistry. HPV immunreaktivity and p53 protein expression were investigated on this specimens. RESULTS: Four patients were positive for HPV immunreactivity whereas 8 patients were positive for p53 protein expression. Both HPV immunreactivity and p53 protein expression were detected in 3 patients. One patient was negative for both HPV and p53. There was no statistically significant relationship between HPV infection and p53 protein expression (p>0.05) CONCLUSION: HPV infection and tumor supressor gene p53 may play a role in the development of conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma. But we did not see any statistical association between HPV infection and p53 protein expression in our study.
